In 2023, it will be 125 years since artist M. C. Escher was born. During this anniversary year, a number of iconic buildings in the centre of The Hague will be decorated in Escher style. The city hall was the first building to be unveiled in Escher style, on Friday 10 March.

Kunstmuseum Den Haag holds the largest Escher museum collection in the world, which will be exhibited in both the Kunstmuseum and Escher in Het Paleis during this special anniversary year.

In addition, there are numerous activities throughout the city in cooperation with cultural partners, schools, neighbourhoods and entrepreneurs. For instance, the Art Museum will organise museum evenings for all city residents during the anniversary year. Residents are invited by district.

All of The Hague in Escher style

The city hall connects the city with its residents. Via an optical illusion on the building, the artists of studio VOLLAERSZWART succeeded in bringing inside to outside; symbolically increasing the accessibility of the city hall. The monochrome use of colour underlines these supposed contrasts, as in many famous works by Escher.

2023: The Hague city of Escher

Escher’s graphic work is about change, contrasts and perception and fits seamlessly with The Hague’s identity. The Hague, city of contrasts such as city and beach, modern and historic, raw and refined. During the jubilee year, The Hague will give substance to the rich and varied range of culture on offer in the city by the sea, and to the fame and appreciation of Escher.
