Today I saw the Barbie movie with my daughters and wrote a review for TheHagueOnLine.
As you’ll see if you click through to my article, I was really impressed. If you didn’t click through – quick summary is that I mainly went along to the movie as my 16 year old daughter was keen, but ended up enjoying it a lot. It was smart, funny and thought-provoking.
So this evening, I was searching for more background information about the movie and came across the Behind the Scenes video below.
After hearing the very first sentence from the lead Barbie actress, I was shouting to my daughter “did you know she’s an Aussie?!”. She did….but I had no idea!
Not only is Margot Robbie an Aussie, she was born in and grew up in my home state of Queensland. After reading through the rest of her achievements during her acting career, I’m surprised I didn’t know her better, though admit that I haven’t watched a lot of movies and series over the last few years. She did look familiar and I’m sure I’ve probably seen her in something, but this was the first time I actually made the connection that she’s from my home country.
Why does that matter? Well as a Dutch Australian, living long term in the Netherlands, I always actively seek connections to the culture of my birth country. I miss Australia and it’s been some time since I lived there and will be some time before I return. It’s nice to know that other girls from country Queensland are also far from home, out there in “The Real World” doing cool stuff.
So, good on ya Barbie! Amazing acting in this movie Margot. Thanks for the entertainment and inspiration.
Also thank you to my dual national daughter for “dragging me along” and getting me to wear pink. So cool how I used to once encourage my kids to play and have fun, and now they do that for me.
Have you seen the movie? What did you think?
Renée 🙂
