On Saturday 6 September 2025, I attended the official opening of the renewed Spuiplein in the centre of The Hague.
Spuiplein lies in the middle of the city’s cultural district, surrounded by Amare, Theater aan het Spui, Filmhuis Den Haag and the Nieuwe Kerk.
The opening took place during the Spotlight Festival, which brought performances, music and cultural activities to locations across the city. Wethouder Saskia Bruines officially opened the Plein together with representatives from Stichting Spuiplein, while Neo-Fanfare 9×13 provided the energetic opening performance.
The new design includes more trees, greenery and places to sit, as well as open areas that can be used for performances and public events. A water basin has also been incorporated into the design to collect rainwater.
It has also been designed as an outdoor cultural venue for theatre, dance, music and film as the intention is for Spuiplein to function not only as a route between buildings, but as a place where people can stop, meet and spend time.
Some time is still needed before the Spuiplein reflects the artist impression, but was nice to be there for the official opening for this cultural heart of the city.
